Bytes Technology Group reports robust expansion in its core business lines, driven by higher software and services sales, despite a dip in operating profit and increased investments, as it positions itself for long-term growth in an AI-driven market.
Bytes Technology Group said it finished the year with solid growth across its core business lines, as higher software and services sales helped offset a tougher trading backdrop. Gross invoiced income rose 11.5% in the 12 months to 28 February, with software up 11.4% and services climbing 24.6%. The latest figures came after a stronger prior year, when the company had already pushed past the £2bn GII mark, underlining how quickly the business has expanded even as conditions have become more demanding.
Profitability was more mixed. Gross profit increased 2.5% over the year, recovering from a 0.3% decline in the first half and improving by 4.6% in the second half as the company worked through the impact of Microsoft’s changes to partner incentives. Operating profit fell 5.6% as Bytes stepped up investment in people and capabilities, while public sector business rose 7.4%.
Chief executive Sam Mudd said the group had spent the year reshaping the business for longer-term growth, including a new structure for private sector sales designed to bring it closer to both customers and vendors. She said the company had retained a high share of spend from existing clients, with 97% of gross profit coming from established relationships and a 99% renewal rate, while also adding £5m from new customers. Bytes also pointed to contract wins in defence, retail and energy.
The business ended the period with headcount up 6.9% to 1,331 as it added staff across sales and service delivery. Mudd said Bytes was well placed to benefit from demand linked to AI, arguing that customers increasingly want a joined-up model spanning licensing, technical support and services. She said the company’s position as a Microsoft Frontier Partner should help it play a bigger role as clients adapt their technology estates.
