In a strategic move to revolutionise talent acquisition, SAP has acquired SmartRecruiters, integrating AI-powered hiring solutions into its HR ecosystem to streamline decision-making and enhance candidate experience.
At the start of August 2025, enterprise software leader SAP announced its intention to acquire SmartRecruiters, a prominent talent acquisition company known for its innovative applicant tracking system (ATS) and AI-driven recruiting solutions. This move marked a significant step toward enhancing SAP’s human capital management (HCM) capabilities, especially within its SuccessFactors suite. SmartRecruiters CEO Rebecca Carr described the acquisition as a moment of mutual transformation, stating that together they are not merely responding to the future of work but actively building it. Carr emphasised a continued focus on purpose-driven product leadership, anchored in the belief that great hiring truly changes everything.
SmartRecruiters’ journey to this pivotal moment began in 2010, when founder Jerome Ternynck set out to create a better ATS after his experience building and selling a previous one. Initially targeting small and medium-sized businesses, the company pivoted five years in to address the needs of global enterprises, collaborating closely with clients like the multinational engineering firm Robert Bosch. Over the last decade, SmartRecruiters developed sophisticated enterprise hiring products. More recently, in 2024, the company radically reimagined its platform by introducing Winston, a flagship AI agent designed to bring deeper insights and efficiency to recruiting processes—a leap towards what Carr describes as SmartRecruiters 3.0, recruiting powered by artificial intelligence.
Carr also reflected on the limits of best-of-breed recruiting technology, which often lacks integration with broader talent management systems, making it challenging to obtain comprehensive data insights. The relationship with SAP was initiated when Dan Beck, General Manager and Chief Product Officer for SAP SuccessFactors, suggested a partnership to accelerate recruiting innovation. The acquisition, now completed as of September 2025, allows SmartRecruiters to gain critical visibility across SAP’s wider HCM ecosystem, transforming what Carr calls SmartRecruiters 4.0. This means integrating recruitment processes with talent management, mobility, and analytics, offering a holistic view of enterprise hiring.
With the acquisition closed, SmartRecruiters is swiftly advancing integration efforts. Priority plans include enabling seamless access to SmartRecruiters’ platform for all SAP SuccessFactors, SAP E-Recruiting, and SAP S/4HANA On-Premise customers within the coming quarters. According to Carr, SAP clients will benefit from advanced recruiting technology now available with relatively low migration and implementation costs. Despite joining SAP, SmartRecruiters will maintain considerable operational independence and continue supporting integration with various third-party technologies. Carr reassured customers about the transition, stating that SAP has committed to retaining SmartRecruiters’ entire team, emphasising a people-centric approach.
Looking ahead, Carr envisions hiring becoming streamlined into four critical decision moments, fully integrated into everyday collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams, Slack, WhatsApp, and SMS. These moments will deliver highly personalised and contextual experiences, powered by AI agents like Winston, supported by complementary AI tools including SAP’s Joule. This vision anticipates an interconnected ecosystem of AI agents across the HR landscape, operating under principles of transparency and responsible AI—shared priorities of both SmartRecruiters and SAP.
The acquisition reinforces SAP’s competitive position in the talent acquisition market by combining SmartRecruiters’ expertise in high-volume recruiting, automation, and AI-driven candidate engagement with SAP’s extensive HR software ecosystem. SAP’s official statements highlight the goal of improving decision-making, reducing time-to-hire, and enhancing the hiring experience for candidates, managers, and recruiters alike. SmartRecruiters’ platform will continue to be available as a standalone solution, offering flexibility to customers while also driving integrated HR innovation.
Demonstrating their combined AI innovation, SmartRecruiters, now an SAP company, recently showcased live AI-powered recruiting solutions at HR Tech 2025. These demonstrations underlined the tangible benefits of AI in recruitment and sought to build confidence among talent acquisition and HR leaders for adopting AI technologies at scale securely.
This strategic acquisition represents a clear signal of SAP’s commitment to shaping the future of talent acquisition and workforce management, leveraging AI and seamless integration to empower organisations globally.
